Did You Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas?

It was a buy weekend...two trips out of town, one overnight stay. And I loved every minute of it. Christmas is my favorite time of year. (I think I've said that a time or two.) I'm looking forward to the week ahead. Some time off. Some shopping. And basically catching up on sleep lost this past weekend.
I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas and Hanukkah. I'm looking forward to the new year and all it brings. Wishing you all the best in the coming year.
Happy 2012!

Fun With Gift Cards-Not Just For The Last Minute Gift Anymore!

Do you use gift cards? Do you gift them? Do you ask for them? Do you put them in a drawer and forget you have them?
I confess to having a preference for actual wrap them up and hand them over gifts when I'm the giver. But when I'm the receiver I love gift cards. Now, I like the thought and effort required by giving just the right gift and I'm one of those people who pretty much love anything a friend or family member chooses to give me. But there is something to be said for the fact that no one knows you better than you know yourself. (Now I will also confess that when I get a gift card I tend to hoard them. I check for expiration dates and save them for the next Christmas if they don't expire before then!)
OK, yes, I admit it. I'm a gift card hoarder.
There are times when only a gift card will do. If you have a friend who loves Starbucks more than pretty much anything, well...you can't exactly wrap up a frappuccino now can you? But a Starbucks gift card is a gift you know they'll love. Know someone who loves to eat at a particular restaurant? A gift card is a great way to give them a night out.
There are also some great benefits to giving gift cards. I recall one year when I was on the hunt for a new television. My local grocery store was offering 10% off on all gift cards when you purchased them with your rewards card. I picked out the television I wanted from Best Buy and figured out the exact price with tax. I then went to the grocery store to buy that amount in gift cards at 10% off.. The story does get a little funny...when I arrived they were out of $100 Best Buy cards. I had to buy enough $15 gift cards to purchase a $700 plus television. If you do the math, that means yes, I walked into Best Buy with 47 gift cards. But hey, my TV was suddenly 10% off. That is a win! (And as an extra bonus-I got money back from the rewards program at my grocery store. Yay!)
Then there are the teenagers...oh, teenagers. I love my teenage niece...I do. But what do you buy for her at Christmas and birthdays? Gift cards have been my go-to gift for years now. When in doubt Amazon and iTunes are sure to please gift card selections. And my dear nephew is getting older, too. Pretty soon he's going to be in the same position. Luckily he's getting an iTouch for Christmas. I know iTunes will make him smile as well.
Are you giving any gift cards this year? What stores are your favorites for gift cards?

I wrote this blog post while participating in the SocialMoms and Gift Cards Rock blogging program, for 6,000 My SocialMoms Rewards Points. For more information on how you can participate, click here.

When In Doubt Buy Chocolate

Do you have someone who is impossible to shop for on your list? Of course you do. Everyone has someone who is impossible to please. They buy everything they want for themselves. The complain if you spend too much. They never drop clues about what they might want. What's a loving friend to do?
For me, the answer is chocolate! Everyone loves good chocolates. They pass the money test. Even really nice gourmet chocolates aren't quite expensive enough to get the, "You did too much!" complaint.
So it's off to Macy's to pick up a little chocolate gift for my impossible to buy for person. Does any store scream Christmas quite as much as Macy's?
I pretty much made my way around the entire store before I found the candy display in the girl's clothing section. Of course I could have asked for help...but I'm more of a struggle and hunt for things on my own kind of girl.
I have my selections narrowed down to two boxes...the one on the right sounds the most delicious...but the one on the left comes with a bonus truffle bar.
I love that the boxes come ready to gift. And no one has to know that there was ever a truffle bar attached, right? It will be our little secret. Do you have any hard to shop for people still left on your list? I recommend chocolate-it's the one treat that's sure to work for even the hardest to please!

You can see my entire shopping trip at Macy's here.

'Twas The Week Before Christmas With #TysonGoodness

Twas' the week before Christmas and under the tree,
Gifts need their wrapping and bows done by me.
The lights for the yard are still stuck here inside,
I wanted them up but I haven't yet tried.
Time's running short with so much left to do,
And I still should eat a good breakfast, too.
A five minute meal is the most I have time for,
Then it's post office time and I'm out of the door.
Tyson Mini Chicken Sandwiches are my answer,
Then I have to fly like Dasher, Dancer and Prancer.
I'll add some bacon and a quick egg as well,
With this yummy goodness my hunger is quelled.
These sandwiches are available at select Walmart stores.
And if you are interested, here's even more!
Buy two boxes at Walmart and send in your receipt,
And you'll get $5 back, that can't be beat!
There's so much to do but it will all be alright.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a quick bite!

Get $20 Back When You Shop Online With MasterCard #Heres2Mom

Are you still busy finishing up your holiday plans? It's not too late to shop online. Most websites can still deliver by Christmas Eve if you shop now. So what are you waiting for? Get shopping!
But wait...you might want to take a quick break and go here first. If you sign up you'll get $20 back as easy as 1, 2, 3!
Singing up for MasterCard's Here's To Mom campaign only takes a few seconds. Just register your MasterCard and shop online between now and December 31. If you spend a total of  $200 or more you'll receive a $20 MasterCard gift card. That's right-you're getting paid to shop!
So where can you shop for this campaign? Anywhere! You can make one big online shopping trip or dozens of little ones. It doesn't matter. All you have to do is spend a total of $200 online with your registered MasterCard and an email with details on your $20 gift card will be in your inbox.

The Lands' End tote I ordered should arrive this Tuesday.
Where have I shopped online this month? Lowes, Amazon, Sephora, Lands' End and Sears. Don't like paying for shipping? Neither do I! I've yet to pay a single shipping fee by searching online for free shipping codes. If you're more of a brick and mortar store kind of girl, that's OK-you can do one of my favorite tricks. Order online and pick up in store. As a matter of fact, I'm heading out in a bit to pick up the panini maker I ordered online last night for my father's birthday gift from Sears. I'll get to park in the loading zone and zip in and out. It couldn't be easier!
My dad's birthday present!
So what am I going to get with my $20 MasterCard gift card? There's a totally kooky lamp I've wanted forever for my living room. I don't need it, I've talked myself out of buying it a few dozen times, but hey. This $20 is for me and I'll get a silly lamp if I want to!
Seriously, isn't this a cool lamp?
So go...go now. Sign up for Here's To Mom and get shopping! And make sure you buy a little something nice for yourself with your $20 gift card when it arrives.

Do It Yourself French Memo and Dry Erase Boards

French Memo Board
Are you making any of your own gifts this year? Are you looking for some low cost gift ideas? I'm here to help! Last month I shared three inexpensive catalog makeovers you could do yourself.. Now I have two more fun and inexpensive projects you can create using Elmer's products!

You've probably seen plenty of  French Memo Boards around. Maybe you've even thought you could make one yourself. Well you can! And it couldn't be easier when you use Elmer's products. What I love about making your own memo board is that it can be customized to your decorating theme. It's also a great inexpensive gift that can be personalized for the recipient.
I started with a 20"x30" Elmer's Foam Board. I applied batting (actually a snow blanket I had purchased after the holidays last year on clearance) to the foam board with Elmer's CraftBond Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive. I then used hot glue to secure my fabric to the board, trimming everything with my  new pink  X-ACTO Designer Series 8' Scissors.  I applied ribbon to the board with more hot glue, spacing the ribbon every 10". (The 20"x30" size of the board makes this the perfect distance.) It's best to do this while actually looking at a picture of a memo board. (It can be easy to get off track if you're not careful.)  Using needle and thread I tufted the spot where the ribbons met and used Elmer's CraftBond Dual Tip Glue Pen to attach rhinestone felt flowers from my stash of craft supplies. I glued on a hook I pulled off of the back of an old poster frame and my board was ready to hang.
French Memo Dry Erase Board
Using all of the same tricks from my traditional French Memo Board I also made a dry erase version. I did all of the same steps, except for first cutting out the center of the foam board. To do this I traced around a pack of photo paper (it was the perfect size) to create a four inch border. I then used my X-ACTO Metal Ruler as a guide while cutting out the center with my X-ACTO Gripster Knife. (I saved the center-it can be used for another project!) After that I applied the batting and fabric just like on the traditional board. The corners were a little challenging. I used my dual tip glue pen again to miter the corners before using the hot glue. To create the dry erase surface I just attached the acrylic sheet from my old poster frame to the back of the foam board with more hot glue.
And there you have two easy and inexpensive gift ideas! I only had to purchase the fabric and one foam board. Everything else was from my craft supply stash. (Well, my craft supplies and an old poster frame-a crafter never throws anything out that might be of use one day!)

Oh, Santa...You're So Inappropriate!

The other day I was watching Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town while wrapping gifts. I've seen it a million times, but this was the first time I really caught on to what a creepy little criminal Santa Claus is!
He's a peeping tom.
He encouraged children-whom he had just met and who's parents were not present-to sit in his lap and offer kisses in return for toys.
When informed he was breaking the law, he ran from authorities to avoid capture.
He repeatedly broke into multiple homes while occupants were sleeping, using any means necessary.
Eventually arrested along with friends and family, a jail break was organized.
After his escape from prison he changed his name and appearance to assist in his new life on the lam.
Is this really the person you want inside your home while you're sleeping?

Supporting Brave Women #BraveWoman

Did you know that one in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime? That number scares me. I don't want to imagine violence against women is happening that often and to that many. But I know it's true. I've seen the effects myself. I've been working with young children my entire adult life. I've been in homes where violence was present. I've seen the effects on the children. I know this is real.
There is one home visit from years ago that I will always remember. I was so grateful I was with an employee of another agency when we knocked on the door. It took a while for someone to answer, but when the door finally opened it was the mother we were there to see, covered in blood. The night before she had been slashed with a knife across the arm by her boyfriend. She had hidden the entire night, in pain and bleeding, and hadn't left until she heard us at the door. We made sure that her baby was taken care of and that she received the medical treatment that was necessary. I couldn't help but wonder what else we could do. And I couldn't help but wonder about her situation. What it must have felt like to spend the night hiding from someone, afraid of what they might do. And I know there are so many other stories just like hers. Other women in similar situations. There are brave women out there right now, making plans, contemplating their options and working towards their freedom. The day they are free of a life of domestic violence. The day they don't have to live in fear.
Brave Woman is a grassroots movement with the goal of shifting personal and public perceptions of women in domestic violence situations. They aren't victims-they're brave women who have courage and strength. And the support of the Brave Woman community .
Visitors to the Brave Woman website are encouraged to take the pledge:
I pledge to honor and respect brave women and children who tackle the difficult journey of change from domestic violence to a new life. I acknowledge my own moment-by-moment bravery, will remain aware of what is happening to others around me, and speak up against violence in any form. I will stand up for human dignity and safety for women and children.
Are you ready to take the pledge? Just visit their website. You can follow Brave Woman on Twitter at @Brave_Woman and on Facebook.  You can also show your support of  Brave Woman by joining us at a Twitter Party on December 19th at 1pm EST. My Baking Bucket List

Forget climbing mountains and jumping out of planes. When I think of a bucket list I think of all of the things I want to bake. I bake a lot. I'm actually baking tonight. And tomorrow night. And the night after that. (There's a shower this weekend with 100 guests. Yes, I'm freaking out a little.) I've baked a lot of things but there are still a few things I've never done that I will get to one day!

1. A Fruit Pie-From Scratch
Not terribly long ago this would have been a pie from scratch. I sort of mastered the chocolate pie this summer-although with a store bought crust. Is that cheating? I've never done more than help my grandma a bit with peeling apples for an apple pie, though, so I'd love to master the art of making fruit pies. And no canned pie filling allowed.
2. Speaking of Pies-Pie Crust From Scratch
I've never even attempted crust before, so I'm not sure how hard it might be. I've had enough trouble using the pre-made crust sheets and getting them in the pie dish without ripping them so I'm a little scared. But I think everyone needs to make a pie with their own two hands at least once in their life, so one day I'm going to give this a shot.
3. Perfect No Crust New York Style Cheesecake
Every cheesecake I've made has been some sort of no-bake cheat. I did try once to do a baked version and it came out horribly. I didn't have a spring form pan so that might have been the issue. I'm now the proud owner of the proper cookware, however, and it's just dying to get broken in.
4. Homemade Cinnamon Rolls
You know those rolls you get at Cinnamonster or Cinnabon? Those. I want to make them in my home. (Although mastering that skill might be slightly dangerous.) If anyone has a great recipe that matches those send it my way!
5. A Chocolate Souffle
If anyone ever asked about the best thing I've ever eaten I would have to mention the chocolate souffle cake with homemade whipped cream I had at Crook's Corner. I'd love to make that or a traditional chocolate souffle. But I'm scared. Too many sitcom jokes, maybe, but they look like they might be the hardest thing in the world to make successfully. But one day I will try-and eventually I will master it!
6.  No-Cheat Creme Brulee
One of my favorite kitchen gadgets is my propane torch. And I have made creme brulee before. But it's always been an "easy" recipe with some cheats. And although it's really good I just know the real stuff is that much better. So one day I'm going to do all of the steps and make a proper creme brulee.

Do you have a baking bucket list? What do you want to master in the kitchen?

Decorate It Forward With #KmartHoliday

I was excited when I was given the opportunity to shop at Kmart for holiday decor. I was beyond thrilled when I was also given the chance to decorate it forward for someone in need of a little holiday cheer.
I immediately knew where I wanted to decorate it forward. I work at a non-profit early education agency. My coworkers are some amazing people. If anyone deserves an extra dose of holiday joy it's them. Anyone out there who works for a non-profit knows there's not a lot of money. And what money is available is going to be used to provide services, not to purchase decorations. That's why I was so happy to decorate my office with items from Kmart.

Christmas came early for me when my box of trimmings arrived on my doorstep. Have you ever opened up a box and once you got everything out you wondered how it all fit in there? That's what this was like. This box was stuffed to the brim with a huge selection of  goodies from Kmart's Golden Heritage collection.  I secreted the box into the office and started digging through everything inside. I'm pretty sure I got a strange look or two as I tried to subtly walk my way through the hallways, counting doors and desks. But inspiration had struck and I wanted to trim the entire office! Even though the box had a ton of supplies, I did make a quick trip that afternoon to Kmart to get just a few more things. I bought a few packs of Trim A Home gold bows and some 3M Command strips. (I didn't want to get in trouble for damaging and walls or doors!)

The office is set up into several cubicle areas in the front with private offices in the back. We had a little Christmas tree in my cubicle suite. It hadn't been decorated yet, so I covered it with the adorable clip on beaded birds from the kit. The birds come with a clip on the bottom or a hanging string on the top. Since I decided to clip on the birds we simply removed the strings by unscrewing the little hook holding them into place. Things are looking more festive already!
The next stop on operation cheer was each individual cubicle. There were enough glitter gold star ornaments in the kit for everyone to get their own. The stars come in gold/gold, gold/teal and gold/red. We used a small decorating command strip hook to attach these to the wall. The Trim A Home bows I picked up were perfect for hiding the hooks.

All of the office doors got their own ornament, too. They received a similar treatment as the cubicles, but instead of stars they got wired jeweled snowflake ornaments. One coworker was in on the surprise and showed up at the office on a Saturday to help. We tried to make sure we spread all of the different colors throughout the space. The snowflakes come in gold, blue, teal and pink. Things are really looking great!
The box of goodies also contained a collection of  glass ornaments in red, teal and gold. We didn't have a Christmas tree in the office. (Well, other than the little one in my cubicle suite.) But that doesn't mean we couldn't decorate a tree. We decided to dress the office ficus in holiday glamour. We even put the Golden Adornment tree skirt from the kit around the tree's base! The decorated ficus makes me smile every time I see it. Who says a Christmas tree has to be an evergreen?
Just a few more touches around the office and we'll be done. A scattering of  kings, drummers and mice around the hallway half walls was an adorable touch. The nutcrackers are actually awesome tree ornaments, but they work as well as tabletop (or in this case half wall top) decor. We just unscrewed the hanging string from the top of each ornament.

Are you ready to do some decorating of your own with Kmart's collection of awesome holiday items? You can win Kmart gift cards this Thursday, December 8th at the #KmartHoliday Twitter Party. Just go here to RSVP and tweet with us Thursday night at 9pm.

I hope to update this piece in the coming week with my coworkers reactions to the decorating surprise-stayed tuned!

{Closed} Elmer's #LooksForLess Challenge And Giveaway

Do you want to give gifts that look like they came from the pages of your favorite catalog? Elmer's wants to help-that's why they created the Looks For Less guide. In the guide you'll find step by step instructions to help you create six designer looks using Elmer's products.
I received an awesome package of goodies from Elmer's, along with the challenge to create a Look For Less of my very own.
I received:
• Black 20x30 Foam Board
• 2 White 20x30 Foam Boards
• CraftBond All-Purpose Glue Stick
• CraftBond Repositionable Glue Stick
• CraftBond Extra-Strength Glue Stick
• X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster Knife
• Painters Calligraphy Set
• Painters Craft Set
• Painters Assorted Colors Set
• $25 VISA gift card for other project supplies

Now call me crazy, but I'm not one to back down from a challenge. I decided that I was going to make not one look, but three!
dry erase board, crate and barrel, crate and barrel hack, diy dry erase board, looks for less
Crate & Barrel
My first inspiration was this cute dry erase board from Crate and Barrel. I started with one of the white foam boards. I lightly outlined my shape and then used my X-ACTO knife to cut it out. (Cut lightly at first and deeper the second time.) When using a knife for a project like this make sure you are cutting on a safe surface like the X-ACTO self-healing mat. Once I had my basic shape I covered it clear peel and stick paper left over from my study carrel project

The Look For Less
I then took my dry erase board and attached it to the black foam board with the CraftBond Extra-Strength Glue Stick. I scored and cut around the shape again, creating a black outline for my board. The final step was adding a loop of black ribbon to hold the dry erase marker in place with my CraftBond Dual Tip Glue Pen.  Total cost for this project? Free! Everything used was either in the supply pack I received or something I already had from a previous project.

The Look For Less
For my next project I decided to recreate candles from Pier 1. These candles are gold, but I wanted to make silver-that would go better with the color scheme in my home. I started by painting the top of a basic white pillar candle with the metallic silver Painters marker. I cannot stress enough the importance of a light hand with this craft. The tip will need to be cleaned frequently on a paper towel as  you work. To see the true look you'll need to let the paint dry completely. Once the first coat is dry, again using a light touch, fill in any spots that were missed.  Using painters tape, I masked off the top of the candle where I painted. I then headed outside and gave the bottom of the candle a quick spray with Elmer's CraftBond Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive.  With the spray adhesive still wet I sprinkled everything with jumbo silver metallic glitter. After that it was ok to remove the painters tape. Then it was just a matter of letting everything dry. My total cost for this project? $1.80 for the candle (purchased with a coupon). I also picked up the glitter for $2.47 and the spray adhesive for $5.97. (I still have plenty of glue and glitter left over for future projects, including lots more candles!)
Frame, Picture, Pier 1, Knock Off, Look For Less, Make It Yourself, Hack
Pier 1
My third and final inspiration was this picture frame from Pier 1. The frame reminded me of the paper beads I made when I was young. I decided that would be the perfect way to create this look for less. I started by making lots and lots of paper beads, using a colorful toy catalog from my recycling bin. I simply cut the paper into narrow triangles with my X-ACTO knife and used  Elmer's CraftBond All Purpose glue stick on the side I wanted exposed. I then rolled the paper around a bamboo skewer. (A toothpick would work well for this, but since I didn't have one I just used the skewer and trimmed it down to the thickness of a toothpick.) I found an inexpensive black frame to use at a discount store. It's important for the frame to be flat for this project. The frame I found had a yellow print pattern on it, so I used my black Painters marker to hide the print. Once the paint had dried I started to attach the beads. The key to recreating this look was making mitered corners. After trying a few different adhesives I discovered Elmer's school glue was the best option. This project was really easy, although making all of the beads did take some time. The total cost? $3 for the frame. Everything else was either in the kit or something I already had.
